A ranch, a barn, and a lean-to walk into your yard…
Which roof type are you picking? All jokes aside, if you’re not sure what roof type is best for your backyard, let’s explore the options we offer at Tuff Shed at The Home Depot!
Whether you want a traditional ranch-style building, a beautiful barn, or a lean-to—there are a few factors that affect which roof type is best for you. You’ll want to consider aesthetics, placement, use case, and restrictions. For example, if you’re looking for lots of overhead storage, a barn should be at the top of your list. Or, if you only have a little space to work with, a lean-to might be the best option for you. Keep reading to learn more about roof types for your backyard building.
Roof Type Breakdown
Ranch
When you think of matching the roof pitch of most houses, chances are, a ranch is the roof type for you. This roof type is a classic gable design with two identical roof sections that meet at the peak of the building. The standard roof pitch is 4/12, but can be customized to the steepness of your choice.
What does 4/12 mean? Great question. Roof Pitch is described as a ratio: the “4” in this case means that for every 12 inches of horizontal run, the roof rises 4 inches. We offer roof pitches from a relatively flat 2/12 all the way up our steepest 12/12 option (that’s a 45-degree slope, for anyone doing the math).
Tuff Shed at The Home Depot offers four different ranch style sheds, like the Sundance Series TR-800, TR-700 and SR-640, along with our Sundance Series Ranch Garage if you’re looking for a space to park your car. Customers choosing our TR-800 model can also select the unique Clerestory Upgrade, and beginning in November 2026, we’ll also offer a Dormer upgrade with this model.
Barn
Did you know? The barn style roof is actually called a gambrel roof. It features two different sloped areas extending upward from the sidewall to the building’s peak. One of the earliest and most common uses for buildings with this styleof roof was to store hay in an overhead lofted area.
We offer barn sheds in three different heights, including the eight-foot sidewall, Sundance Series TB-800, the seven-foot sidewall TB-700, and the six-foot sidewall TB-600.
Lean-to
Lean-to sheds are a single slope building with the peak along one of the sidewalls instead of along the center of the building. The roof pitch is typically 2/12 but can be upgraded if you’d like. Tuff Shed at The Home Depot offers the Sundance Lean-To.
Aesthetics and Customization: What do you want your building to look like?
It’s been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Tuff Shed gives you plenty of choices for what you want your backyard building to look like. The ranch-style roof offers a versatile, residential look. Barns are commonly associated with farms, and they offer a classic, rural appearance. But they’re not only for the country, consider an urban barn for your backyard in the city. The single slope roof of a Lean-Tos can translate into a more modern or contemporary feel, especially if you go with a monochromatic color scheme.
Besides choosing roof style, customers get to select shingle color or even upgrade to our High Definition (HDZ) Dimensional shingles with more color depth and roof protection. Hoping to increase the roof pitch (steepness), add skylights or even a metal roof to your building? Tuff Shed gives you options there too.
Placement: Where will you put your shed?
Your available space and building square footage can also affect which roof type would work best for your backyard building. All of our sheds and garages come in a variety of sizes, but different roof styles just work better for different spaces.
Our ranch buildings are by far our most popular and they offer more roof upgrades than any other style. They also can be placed nearly anywhere in your yard.
Because of the additional overhead space, barns actually offer more storage relative to the building’s footprint. It’s easy to maximize your barn’s space by adding the overhead loft upgrade.
A lean-to is perfect if you’re working with limited space in your yard. Because of the single slope roof, they are easier to fit in narrow or awkward spaces. The Sundance Lean-To is a great choice if you need to place the building near or even against an existing structure or fence (almost as if the building is leaning on it).
Long story short, when it comes to an amazing selection of building types, sizes and available customization, Tuff Shed has you covered.
Use Case: What will you put in your shed?
We like to say that Tuff Shed buildings have ‘a million uses.’ While the type of building you select doesn’t necessarily limit you, there are some buildings that work better for specific uses.
A ranch is an ideal option whether you’re looking for a garden shed, a home gym, home office, or anything in between. They offer a classic layout which makes this building style very versatile. With their optional overhead loft, barns give you extra storage that’s a little out of the way. So, they are an excellent option if you’re going to be storing items that you won’t need to access often, like holiday decor, outdoor equipment, or seasonal supplies. The TB-800 2S is actually a two-story building. We’ve seen these be converted into ADUs, man caves, hobby spaces, and more. Lean-to buildings are ideal for garden and lawn tools, outdoor equipment, and supplies that you will need to access regularly. If you just need a small storage solution, a lean-to could be the right pick.
Restrictions:
There’s one more thing to consider when picking your backyard building—your community. Depending on where you live, there may be certain permitting laws, HOA restrictions, and more specifically height restrictions. Tuff Shed has a team of permitting experts that can help you navigate any rules or regulations in your area.
The Mesa Ranch is a great solution for HOA height restrictions. It is the shortest building we offer, and features a peak height of 5’11”. You can work directly with a local design pro to customize this building. Two other options are the Sundance Series SR-640 and Keystone Series KR-640, they have a sidewall height of 6’4”. The roof pitch of ranch-style buildings can also be upgraded to match the steepness of your roof if that’s required. Barns are typically our tallest buildings, which are great if you don’t have height restrictions in your area. If you have very strict size considerations and can only get a small backyard building, lean-to buildings are ideal. You can also upgrade the roof pitch of a lean-to if it needs to match your home.
