Turning a Tuff Shed Into a Chicken Coop

Jun 20, 2025 |  Uncategorized

Listen, eggs can be expensive.

If you’ve already been thinking about keeping chickens (or if you’ve recently started considering it), this might be your sign to start. While we don’t have a chicken coop model, we can confirm that the Tuff Shed community has tried and tested customizing our sheds into chicken coops with great success.

So…what makes Tuff Sheds a good starting point for a chicken coop?

Strong, Reliable Framing

First things first, having a strong building is a good start for raising chickens. This obviously keeps predators out—which is good if you’re trying to avoid a Fantastic Mr. Fox situation—and that added security also can help your flock feel safer and lay more eggs.

At Tuff Shed, we use 24” on center framing, which is basically the technical way to say, “They’re built to the same standards as the house you live in.” If it’s good enough for human architecture, the chickens are sure to approve. On top of that, our steel flooring is also a great help in controlling moisture inside the shed.

Customizable Builds

While we don’t sell ready-to-order coops, our buildings are fully customizable. That means that you can choose your perfect size of shed—your Tuff Shed design consultant will often have info about what sizes require building permits. From there, you can custom-place vents, windows, and doors to keep your ladies happy, healthy, and laying.

We’ve even seen a Tuff Shed outfitted to keep ducks—complete with transom windows at the bottom of the walls instead of the top to let the ducks see out of the shed.

Super-easy Installation and Lasting Quality

Tiffany O’Neill, the proud owner of two sheds (one is a Self Serve Farm Stand), converted one to a chicken coop. Tuff Shed can be put up in as little as a day—and you don’t have to lift a hammer… or even a finger. Our expert teams do the hard work of installation for you. Tuff Sheds also have a great track record for lasting a long time. When we talk to our customers years after they’ve had their sheds, the easy process and lasting quality of Tuff Sheds come up time and time again.

Tiffany told us that she knows Tuff Sheds aren’t the cheapest shed on the market. But they are the strongest build, which lets her concentrate on other things around the farm because she’s not worried about her Tuff Shed leaking or falling apart.

That’s all, folks.

Good luck on your chicken coop journey, and may your eggs be plentiful with those beautiful golden-orange yolks.
